Solar: Cost Shift or Net Benefit?
Utility companies have long argued that customers with rooftop solar installations create additional costs for other customers. However, examinations of the data supporting these assertions have revealed major gaps, errors in calculations, and incomplete information. Those advocating for solar energy counter that solar installations actually create value for non-solar customers, and they present their own research supporting this position. The question remains – which side has it right?
The Washington Academy of Sciences (WSAS) has been tasked by state legislators to perform an objective, evidence-based assessment to evaluate the true worth of distributed solar power and energy storage systems, seeking definitive answers.
To develop a thorough and neutral assessment, WSAS plans to collaborate with key stakeholders to collect extensive data that will inform proposed methodologies for regulatory bodies and utilities to accurately determine whether cost-shifting occurs or if solar provides net benefits.
Why should this concern you?
This study’s findings will influence how utilities and governing authorities establish future rates for excess power generated by residential solar systems. Simply put, will the current net metering system remain or be replaced?
